Research on cognitive behavioural therapy, cbt counselling has been carried out extensively and is now recognized as one of the most effective forms of psychotherapy. Cognitive behavioural psychotherapy, cbt counselling, is based on the knowledge that many of our psychological problems are caused and maintained by our own unhelpful beliefs and our underlying assumptions about others and ourselves. These beliefs and underlying assumptions are learned through our past experiences and interactions with significant others around us. At the time we learned them, they may have helped us cope with our experiences. Now, however, they may no longer be helpful and often hinder our effective functioning.
Treatment is based on the understanding of each clients individual problems. The therapist and client will then work together to identify goals and to agree with a shared treatment plan. The focus of cbt counselling is mainly on the here and now rather than the past. The aim of cognitive behavioural therapy, cbt counselling is to enable the client to generate solutions to their problems that are more helpful than their present ways of coping.
